United Nations University recruiting: free online openED course: ‘Business and Management Competencies in a Web 2.0 world’

United Nations University UNU-MERIT and partners are now recruiting for the 3rd edition of the free online openED course: ‘Business and Management Competencies in a Web 2.0 world’.

Starting 7 November, the course is for both students and business professionals and is based around 10 modules including project management, communication skills, and the latest web tools. Participants can follow the entire course or only the modules that interest them.

FOSS Business Models training kicks off in Abuja,Nigeria

On 24th October 2011, the first West African FOSS Business Model took off. About 20 enthusiastic participants registered for the training. The venue for the training is the resource centre in the Ministry of Education Office. After a highly engaging e-learning session it was great for participants to finally meet face-face. Participants are drawn from several west African countries.

Vacancy: Africa FOSS Community Empowerment Manager

The Africa FOSS Community Empowerment Manager is the community face of the African Free Software and Open Source organization in Africa. S/He manages communications in both directions and empowers the multiple communities hosted by FOSSFA. This digital-savvy employee is also responsible for all communications, PR, social media, and content creation on the community portals, among other things.

First Training of Trainers on “Free & Open Source Business Models for Africa” in West Africa about to start

As ict@innovation successfully implemented Trainings of Trainers (ToT) on African FOSS Business Models in different Eastern and Southern Africa countries, we are now going to implement such trainings in the Region of West Africa.

The first West African ToT will consist of a full-time face-to-face phase of two weeks in Nigeria from 24th October to 4th November 2011, and be accompanied by 4 weeks of part-time online training (10th to 21st October and 7th to 18th November 2011).

African Governments warming up to FOSS

After a number of year of FOSS advocacy,governments in Africa are beginning to warm to the idea of FOSS. Last week from Sept. 14-16th 2011 representatives from member states of The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) met in Nairobi to discuss the status of FOSS implementations in their countries.

It was wonderful to hear that governments in Africa are using FOSS in various projects. From simple websites using Joomla to setting up parliamentary record management systems.

LPI-1 Certification Training Scheduled for Nov 2011 - Zambia

Hi all,
I am working with the University of Zambia Consultancy and Training Unit (CTU) for the LPI-1 Training in Lusaka, Zambia scheduled for November 2011. We have started passing the word around and will be posting an advert in the local tabloid from next week which will run till the the November.

Tanzanian trainee programmers get inspiration at the Mentored Internship Programme

A group of geek-interns were out in full force in Tanzania recently, taking part in rigorous FOSS development training, which included topics such as optimisation techniques and infrastructure deployment and maintenance.

The workshop, which is part of the greater Mentored Internship Project also known as the MIP (of which you can find out more information on page 7 of this Chisimba newsletter), was hosted at the University of Dar es Salaam in February this year.
